Rosie Revere, Engineer
Rosie Revere, Engineer is a fantastic story of perseverance for kids. One day, Rosie makes her favourite uncle, Fred, a hat to keep snakes off his head (he's a zookeeper, see). She constructed the hat from parts of a fan and some cheddar cheese spray (which everyone knows keeps pythons away). But when she gave Fred the hat he slapped his knees and laughed till he cried, which made Rosie shelf the hat and never want to make anything again. Until, one day, her great-great-great aunt Rose comes to stay, and tells Rosie how she's always dreamed of flying. Rosie couldn't get this out of her head, and decided to try to build a gizmo to help her aunt fly. She creates a cheese-copter: 'It floated for a moment and whirled round and round, then froze for a heartbeat and crashed to the ground'. Rosie hears laughter behind her and it's her aunt Rose, almost in tears. Rosie decides, 'I'll never be a great engineer', but her aunt exclaims, 'You did it hooray! It crashed. That is true. But first it did just what you needed it to do...it flew!'. This is a gorgeous story with beautiful illustrations that will get kids excited about experimenting, and hopefully inspire them to build great things! Check out Rosie's friends, Ada Twist, Scientist and Iggy Peck, Architect.
