Making Things Right
This book is a love letter to hard work, craft, and the joys of a job well done. It shows that the value of work can sometimes be hidden and unappreciated, but will serve the building and the customer for decades to come. Ole Thorstensen is a master carpenter and in this book he takes us through a project from start to finish. He also shares his thoughts on such subjects as things being built to last, IKEA, some of the issues surrounding immigrant workers, and the economics of multiple contractors quoting for jobs. Anyone undergoing construction work on their homes or having a house built will find this account from the early planning stages through to the completed work a very interesting read. It might also make you wish that this gentleman was the one doing the job - he is so thorough and caring in his approach, leaving no detail unattended to. This book is just as solid as the craft that he describes.
