The Value of Everything
"What's it worth to you?" we would boast as kids when we had somethingsomeone else wanted."I'll give you my favourite toy" or "my go on the swing" or even "I'll do your homework". Understanding how, why and to what degree someone values something has been questioned since ancient philosophy. Mariana Mazzucato's book looks at the current state of the economic crisis and asks who really creates wealth in our world? and how do we decide the value of what they do?. "We cannot understand economic growth if we do not go back to the beginning: what is wealth and where does value come from? Are we sure that much of what is passing for value creation is not just value extraction in disguise?". This book is a fascinating look at how these days value-extraction is rewarded more highly than value creation. The ways in which big companies have managed to place value on themselves, through products and technology created with the assistanceof state-funding, leaves us wondering where the value for the tax-payer is in all of this. We have been misidentifying 'taking' with 'making' with regards to these big companies, and along the way havelost sight of what value really means. This book is a fascinating look which activities create value, which extract it and which destroy it. Answers to these questions are key if we want to replace the current system with a type of capitalism that works for all.
