Three Castles Burning

Based on the excellent podcast of the same name. Donal Fallon's book traces the history of Dublin through the history of 12 well known city centre streets. Never afraid of a tangent, this potted history is irreverent, and very entertaining. The ease with which Donal moves from architectural appreciation to social commentary to literary appreciation demonstrates his mastery of his subject. It's very obvious just how much he loves this city. The chapters are full of the types of facts, anecdotes and stories you might find yourself recounting as you wander about the streets in question. It is as much an insight into the Irish psyche as it is the history of the town and a fascinating, well written read.
