Working Class Heroines
Based on 30 years of research, chatting to and recording the stories of the working-class women of Dublin, acclaimed historian Kevin C. Kearns brings us this fascinating book about the extraordinary women of Dublin's tenements. It goes from sthe squalid tenements days of the early 1900s, through the mid-century decade of block flats, and into the 1970s when deadly drugs infiltrated poor neighbourhoods. The chapters are themed as well, with titles like "Making Ends Meet", "Bejaysus, they had pride" and "Unwed Mothers, Unfortunate Girls". Through the stories of these women and the way they are presented, what emerges is an intimate and poignant celebration of the mammies and grannies at the centre of family life in Dublin.
