Yanis Varoufakis: Adults in the Room
What is it?
Yanis Varoufakis was the Greek Minister for Finance from January to July 2015 when he led negotiations with Greece's creditors during the Greek government-debt crisis. Aside from being a politician, he is also an economist and an academic. Adults in the Room is the story from the time he became elected Finance Minister, and tells the particular circumstances of "our continent's descent into a morass from which it may not escape for a long, long time." Varoufakis describes his journey from academic, to government minister for a while, before turning to whistle-blower. It features his engagements with powerful people like Angela Merkel, Mario Draghi, Christine Lagarde, Emmanuel Macron and Barrack Obama. It looks at the EUs disregard for democracy in Greece, and how many supporters of the Labour Party in Britain went on to vote for Brexit. "Brexit boosted Donald Trump. Donald Trump's triumph blew fresh wind into the sails of xenophobic nationalists throughout Europe. Vladimir Putin must be rubbing his eyes in disbelief at the way the west has been undermining itself so fabulously." This book is a gripping read about what Europe, Britain and the United States are becoming, and it gives real insights into how and why our politics and social economies have fractured. It's a meaty read at a whopping 535 pages!
