Scarf Season

With the slight nip in the air and the leaves starting to fall it’s finally starting to feel like Scarf season and of the many things I’ve been dying to show you is this year's selection of Scarves from McKernan Woollen Mills in Clare.
Eugene & Anke have been making scarves in Clare for the last 35 years. Anke trained as a handweaver and has an amazing understanding of colour, she says inspiration can come from anywhere and that like Josef Albers said:‘Colour is like cooking, the cook puts in more or less salt, that’s the difference.’ I’m always impressed by the new colourways they come up with and how much joy and exuberance they manage to get into such seemingly simple garments.
We’ve selected two different colourways of the Rufus Scarves - Very Berry & Blue Eclipse, the really vivid Green Peace Colourway in the Huckleberry Scarf and the Gold Flame Riddle Scarf that’s just full of delight.
While their knitted scarves are made digitally on Stoll machines - where the images are worked out as pixels, they also produce woven scarves on restored Hattersley Domestic looms that are great for scarves because of their narrow width, and create a textile very close to handwoven fabric. If you ever find yourself in Tuamgraney I’d recommend popping in for one of their guided tours. And if not, they’ve made a really atmospheric video about what they do that you can check out here.
