Acting the Maggot

Acting the maggot is fooling around, or messing. It denotes a light-hearted approach to whatever is going on, that can used an explaination - sure I was only acting the maggot, or a request to settle down - stop acting the maggot. Its rarely used as an insult but often as an excuse.
