WTF Happened

WTF Happened tells the inside story of #WakingTheFeminists, the grassroots movement that challenged gender inequality in Irish theatre and reshaped cultural debate both on and off the stage.

Sparked by the Abbey Theatre’s 2016 centenary programme, which excluded women artists, what began as collective outrage on social media quickly grew into a rigorously organised, year-long campaign with national impact. This book traces how #WakingTheFeminists transformed the Irish theatre landscape, while also resonating far beyond it.

Bringing together contributions from activists, academics, historians and arts professionals, and supported by the Irish Theatre Institute, this richly documented volume forms a multidisciplinary archive relevant to gender studies, theatre and arts practice, cultural policy, social justice and contemporary Irish history. It includes photographs, social media exchanges and ephemera preserved by the movement’s organisers, alongside material held by the National Library of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland.

Both a definitive historical record and an inspiring guide for future activists, WTF Happened captures a moment of collective action that achieved lasting change, while reminding us of the work still required to realise full gender equality in the arts and in society.
