Shakespeare is Hard, but so is Life

In this witty, iconoclastic book, the bestselling author Fintan O'Toole challenges how we tend to interpret Shakespeare's tragedys. Originally published in 2002, when Fintan O'Toole was drama critic for the New York Daily News, this criticism of our approach Shakespears tragic heros stands the test of time. It's also a very interesting exercise in developing an argument. Broken into 5 essays O'Tool opens with an essay on the lenses we apply to Shakespears work, and in the subsquent essays looks at Shakespeare's most enduring tragedies: Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and King Lear.

While there is a lot of literary criticism of Shakespeare in the world, and plenty of perspectives to be had, this is a very entertaining version, from a gifted and interesting writer, showing off the essence of his literary style.
