This Way Up
Authors and YouTube sensations Mark Cooper-Jones and Jay Foreman are known as The Map Men, and they love maps. More specifically, they love maps that have something wrong with them. Whether it's a missing country, a fictional mountain range, or a mis-drawn border, they love that these mistakes inspire the question what on earth happened here?
This Way Up features a selection of some of the very best wrong maps, some that are decades old and some that are still being published today. These include a map that IKEA stocked until 2019 that omitted New Zealand for some reason, and a map featured in a 2013 CNN segment in which Rio de Janeiro was mislabeled as Hong Kong.
Using the trademark off-kilter and irreverent tone of their YouTube series, authors Cooper-Jones and Foreman explore the weird and wonderful world of maps with humour and infectious enthusiasm. There's even a chapter written entirely in the form of a song. With plenty of maps throughout to illustrate their points, this is a fun and entertaining read that is perfect for dipping in and out of.
