great gift

I find the point of most cookbooks is inspiration, and while I own and look at lots of them, rarely do they actually change what I cook on the regular. Anna Jones new book is a bit of an exception.

In Easy wins she takes 12 core ingredients  - Lemons, Olive Oil, Vinegar, Mustard, Tomatoes, Capers, Chilli, Tahini, Garlic, Onions, Miso and Peanut - which she calls flavour hits and gives you a range of sweet and savoury dishes built around these ingredients. Immediately when I opened the book I started making shopping lists in my head, as I could imagine just how tasty these recipes were. I never knew what to do with capers and the idea of putting them in chocolate ice cream is a revelation. I've made the Tahini, pear & honey flapjacks to great acclaim, as well as aubergine moju and white bean and pickle stew and there are many bookmarked pages I'm definitely going to try out.

The recipes are easy to follow and simply written, and while there are some exotic ingredients in a few of them, it's more the combinations of flavours that's different. There is even a section on how to layer flavours, as well as one on flavour replacement for traditional dishes. It's definitely one of the most interesting cookbooks I've come across in some time and is a great one for anyone trying to expand their repertoire and get more flavour out of their food.
