In Seeing What’s Hidden, author Manchán Magan explores how ancient Irish culture retains deep resonances with global indigenous traditions of reciprocity, respect, and reverence. Before Ireland was colonised, it was a culture with a deeply spiritual relationship to the Earth and the sea, and Manchán argues that, deep down, we are still connected to these old ways. Perhaps by reconnecting with what our ancestors once knew to be true, we can create a renewed relationship to our land, our traditions, and each other.

With a focus on mythology, early law, folklore and placenames, Manchán traces how the Irish psyche was shaped by its forests, sacred trees and landscapes. Manchán encourages us to become re-enchanted with these old ways of knowing and seeing, in the hopes that it may guide us as we chart our course forward from here.

Unfortunately, Manchán was unable to finish this book before his untimely passing at the age of 55. The project was completed by his close friends and colleagues and serves as a fitting capstone to an incredible life and career.
