End Times Fascism
In End Times Fascism, authors Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor make the urgent argument that we are living through a new age of fascism, in which tyrants like Trump have joined forces with tech billionaires and religious fanatics. They claim that this new era of fascists have made peace with the global-scale existential crises that we face. Rather than attempt to improve the world, they simply seek to insulate themselves from all the chaos they believe is to come, chaos that they are only accelerating with their actions.
The book looks at three main components of the end times fascism alliance – the religious end timers, the tech end timers, and the ethno-nationalist end timers. While these groups may strongly disagree on certain issues, they are united in believing that the end of the world is nigh and that they should be the chosen few who survive. In abandoning the possibility of a positive future on earth, they have become traitors to our planet.
But, if you're at all familiar with Naomi Klein's work, you'll know that this book is not without hope. The authors remind us that we will always outnumber the fascists and that fascism is always vulnerable, thus, it can be defeated. The final part of the book focuses on the growing movements to resist fascism, whether it's people in Minneapolis protecting their neighbours from ICE or the global movement to protest data centres. In stark contrast to the end times fascist, this resistance is built on a deep desire to stay on this planet and to protect all that is irreplaceable and alive.
